History & provenance
The original changing wildlife series.
The 1992 issue is one chapter in the series. The Perth Mint first issued the Australian Silver Kookaburra in 1990. Its one-ounce format pairs Australian legal-tender status with a capped annual mintage and a new interpretation of the native bird each year. Coins through 2017 were struck in .999 fine silver.
That changing reverse is the series’ collecting engine: a date is also a distinct artwork rather than only a new inscription. The 2015 anniversary issue deliberately revisited the 1990 design, illustrating how the program uses its own visual history to reward long-running date sets.
